The unstoppable Hilux has repeatedly demonstrated its strength since its global debut in 1968, conquering the North Pole, Icelandic volcanoes, the Antarctic, and taking first place in the 2019 Dakar Rally. Some of us might also recall the episode of Top Gear where the Hilux was put through torture but continued to function normally.
What can go wrong
- Huge white smoke plumes can emerge from the exhaust as a result of the regeneration (or burn off) process for the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). This is particularly an issue with cars which are mostly driven in an urban environment.
- Another problem is the exceedingly noisy timing chain failure.
- However, both issues have extended warranty support.
Should you buy the Toyota Hilux
Yes, but it also depends on whether you're buying it because everyone else is, or whether it genuinely checks all your boxes.
There is no doubting the HiLux's outstanding reputation for reliability over the years. However, given how much better the competition gets with each new generation, we strongly advise taking at least a Ford Ranger for a test drive before you buy a HiLux.
While both cars are quite good off-road, we believe the Ranger outperforms the HiLux, especially in terms of daily driving enjoyment, comfort, and refinement. Any inadequacies can most certainly be fixed by the installation of clever aftermarket modifications.
